What is the link to the new website? http://staging.freecycle.org/ You may ask for the user name and password in the OIDG group How will word get to all the groups who don't participate on the Modsquad? Thru you for starters. Feel free to tell neighboring mods, state modsquads, etc about this. Also, GOAs will be doing their level bests to spread the word as well. Also, I as a group owner would feel VERY uncomfortable giving Freecycle the email addresses of 1,100 people without their permission either. Then don't. Post to your group and ask people to join up themselves. It'll be an interesting exercise in seeing who reads ADMINs, anyway... :-) However, you may end up in an unenviable position of having your membership spread across two systems for some time as people move across. Perhaps someone can explain how joining the "new" Freecycle server will occur? The only information needed is a username and an email address, both of which can be obtained from the Yahoo! membership list. A random password is generated and sent to the email address (proving it's live) and the user will need to change their password the first time they log in. Will there still be a management area for the mods/owners to change things? Absolutely. The idea is to give local mods more Freecycle-specific tools and to automate tasks which are not Freecycle-specific in Yahoo Groups (like adding “OFFER” to a subject line, etc). More good stuff, les tedious stuff. When owners/mods go on the new group, what should they be able to access? All I can access is the posts page (without details) with the tabs for different posts / Home / Browse Groups / FAQ / About Freeycle / donate/ sponsors. Is this right, or is there other manager access I should be able to see at all? That is exactly what you are supposed to see at this time. Currently there is nothing to manage during phase one of the new site as all local groups are still Yahoo Groups. There will be a management area for phase two. If your group is a Yahoo Group, you manage your group there instead. I was wondering what kind of specific feedback the web programmers wanted from Mods about their own group sites? Right now our group messages are appearing on the new site, however, Subject lines that include PPU or Needed (Subject lines that don't include OFFER, WANTED, TAKEN or RECEIVED) do not show up. Is this normal? What else should I be checking on my group's site and comparing to the new site and then be passing on to the programmers? I don’t know the answer to this one. If it doesn’t seem to work for your group, then let Richard know in the OIDG. Why are some words misspelled? They aren’t. Message Maker is written and updated in the UK so some words are as they spell them. When the time comes will there be a General announcement letter for all groups to use? And will that be here in this group or in the FAQ section? Are all groups going to announce at the same time of day? There is no specific time which will come. When you choose to move over to the new site, you may then let your members know. The ability to do so likely won’t exist until August at the earliest. If you choose not to move over, then the time won’t come at all, of course! ? On the new site, if a moderator bans a member, is that person banned from ALL of Freecycle, or just from that one group? I DON'T KNOW. Should there be some mechanism, having banned a member, for warning other mods about them or recording certain details centrally. I'm thinking primarily of spammers here. Yes, there probably should be. We’ll be looking at additional tools like this as we move forward. Each member will have a notes area which only moderators may view for example |
