FILES - Curbside Alerts - how to look out of the box

While I agree with some of the problems with curb alerts and Ricks reply letter states the dangers well, but there are other methods of handling the member's requests on curb alerts in apartment complexes. Since I run a Freecycle group to help recycle items, I hate to say a flat "no" to members trying to recycle, I try to find a way to make it into a "yes", even if it means they won't be using my group as the solution.

I have come up on this issue before and have had good luck talking with the apartment complex owners in setting up a "free drop-off" center for the residents. Sometimes it takes some time for them to understand that they are keeping their trash dumpsters less full (so there are fewer pickups and cost from the city) as well as providing a service for their tenants.

Most places contacted have been eventually agreeable to setting up a small, covered, three-sided structure next to the dumpster for tenants to place furniture, lamps, electronics and the like that could be reused. Some places have even setup a recyclable bins for aluminum, plastic, and glass. Normally they have their maintenance/yard person go through about once a week and throw away the older items that have not found homes to make room for new items.

So the next time a member contacts you try looking outside the box of what you can do just using the Freecycle group. This is just one example where much recycling can be accomplished but the Freecycle group is not the best option to offer the member. You may be able to change a flat "no" to a better "not on the Freecycle list but try this method" and help an eager member in their recycling efforts. And that member will remember your commitment and probably ask a dozen more friends to join the group. To me the goal is to recycle items and build local community involvement and my Freecycle group is just one tool (and an important one!) in accomplishing that goal.
