"The Gift," by Lewis Hyde. This book captures the essence of the gift and its historical and current limited role in society. The first half is great and is what we are all about. The second half is a bit academic and esoterically limited. Definitely a worthy read to understand our underpinnings and our potential...
"The Gift". This little gem was written by the Frenchman, Marcel Mauss. His work presents the first systematic study of gifting from primitive cultures to the (almost) present of 1950. The gift exchange as well as the gift itself become part of a society which places value on the interpersonal and the community -- something not measured in traditional monetary economic models. Interesting stuff.
