Filed under: US Northeast, Recycling Info, Blog, The Web, All U.S. — Fiona @ 3:13 pm

A few years back, Deron Beal worked for a recycling organization in Tucson, Ariz. He’d drive an old pickup truck around to other nonprofit groups, and say, “I found this old desk or this computer. Can you guys use it? I spent [most of my] time calling or driving around,” he says.

That changed on May 1, 2003, when he sent off an e-mail to about 30 friends and a handful of nonprofit groups. Those who needed something should just e-mail everyone else. Those who had something to give away could tell the others about it, too. Freecycle.org was born.

On Saturday, July 5, visit the Maynard Community Farmers’ Market to learn how you can save money and reduce your impact on the environment.

To save money on trash stickers, reduce the quantity of your weekly trash. Composting and freecycling are two ways to achieve this.

Maynard Community Gardeners’ members will be at their tent with advice on how you can turn your food scrapes and yard waste into ‘black gold’ for your garden.

At the Community tent, members of the local Freecycle group will let you know how you can join freecycling to keep things out of the waste stream and share their experience both of obtaining items they wanted from others and disposing of things they no longer needed.

Plenty Magazine: Outfitting apartments with found and repurposed items

So where to scavenge for materials? Stop at construction sites to ask for whatever scraps and leftover materials they won’t be using. Near the ends of terms, ask at schools whether they’ll be discarding any furniture, fixtures, appliances, or anything else. Join your local Freecycle.com group—or start your own free/trade/barter circle. And without plundering protected wildernesses, consider nature: use a particularly gorgeous stone as a doorstop, or make a lustrous coat rack by sanding down a sturdy branch and nailing a few (scavenged/found) hooks into it. Go wild and use your imagination.

10am: I trawl the internet for free things. On gumtree.com and craigslist.org, I find advertisements for free haircuts from trainee stylists.
