Kymberly Deem doesn’t like to throw things away. In fact, she tries to do the opposite: She takes what she no longer wants and gives it to someone who does.

“We are such a throw-away society,” Mrs. Deem said. “I can’t stand to see things that are still usefull go to waste.”

That would explain her enthusiasm for the Freecycle Network, a group based in Tucson, Ariz.

I have lived in many localities in the United States and the world, and have found recycling in Albany to be horrible or almost nonexistent.
Weekly, as I carefully clean and sort my recyclables, I wonder what’s the point. Sort the newspapers, rinse the cans and jars, put deposits to the side, and donate clothes to a thrift store and the couch to Freecycle.

The Journal-Standard
Instead of buying all food at Super Wal-Mart, some could be bought at the new farmers’ market, where people can buy locally grown food, which is inexpensive and much healthier as it has not endured all that processing and packaging needed for shipping long distances. We have some excellent alternatives for clothing: Goodwill, The Salvation Army, Twice as Nice are examples. www.freecycle.org offers used items free; perhaps we could establish this service locally.

Fredericksburg.com - Freecycle that clutter
***UPDATED 5/29/06 - Added pictures***

By 9:30 on a recent Saturday morning, the Combs family of Spotsylvania County had loaded a minor mountain of treasure into the back of their pickup.

Mom Carrie, a nursing student, got a pile of reference books. Dad Stephen hit the paperback jackpot with titles from Stephen King and Louis L’Amour. Nine-year-old Michael got brand-new jigsaw puzzles still in shrink wrap and a bagful of cool toys.

And then there were a new waffle iron, a pastel-patterned quilt, a nearly new winter jacket, a Kenny G CD and a dress for church.

“Honey, I made out!” Carrie Combs said as she tucked the last of her windfall into the pickup and shut the tailgate.

It didn’t cost them a penny.

They and dozens of other area residents were in Lynda Greene’s Spotsylvania farm field for a yard sale that wasn’t really a yard sale. It was a giveaway run by and for participants in the Spotsylvania group of the Freecycle Network.

Freecycle is a simple idea that caught fire thanks to the Internet and people’s innate fascination with acquiring and getting rid of stuff.

FREECYCLE(TM) AWARD presented on behalf of Freecycle Founder Deron Beal

Filed under: US Central — ScottUSnews @ 5:38 am

FREECYCLE AWARD. West Salem eighth grader Whitney Lynch was presented with a Certificate of Environmental Stewardship by Kevin Schilt, Edwards County Freecycle Moderator, on behalf of Freecycle Founder Deron Beal.

West Salem eighth grader Whitney Lynch was presented with a Certificate of Environmental Stewardship by the Freecycle Network last week for her recycling efforts at West Salem Grade School. The certificate was presented by Edwards County Moderator Kevin Schilt on behalf of Freecycle Founder Deron Beal.
Lynch saw a need at the end of the last school year, but really got busy this year, taking action on the problem. “I wanted to start something and there was no recycling at the school here. We started with paper since there is massive amounts wasted,” Lynch said. “We continued to plastic bottles and aluminum cans.”
Lynch was assisted by teacher LaVada Meeks in her efforts which include bins in the hallway where students empty boxes of paper from the individual classrooms. When they need to be emptied, Dale Hayes comes and picks it up.
Lynch has also taken the lead on applying for a state grant to help keep the program going at West Salem.
When the recylcing program was mentioned in the press earlier in the school year, Kevin Schilt of West Salem was intrigued. He contacted Meeks and wanted to know how much Lynch was actually involved in the project. Soon after, Schilt nominated Lynch for the award.
The award was in recognition for her dedication and outstanding commitment to conservation and waste reduction through recycling.
There are over 3,500 Freecycle groups located around the world with over 2.2 million members.
