For those too squeamish to dig through bags of waste for free loot, Weissman recommends shopping in the aptly-named “Free Stores” and “Really Really Free Markets,” or logging onto websites like Freecycle and craigslist, where users alert one another to items they’re willing to give away, and post notices asking for things they want.

In conjunction with Freecycle.org, many of the pieces used to create the artworks were then advertised and made available for people to collect once the exhibition had ended. The redundant office furniture for a brief time became artworks, before they in turn were given new homes and a renewed sense of purpose.

The Freecycle network was started in May 2003 to promote waste reduction in
Tucson, Arizona, to help save desert landscape from being taken over by landfills, but Freecycle.org is now made up of many individual groups across the globe. It’s a grassroots and entirely not-for-profit movement of people who are giving (& getting) stuff for free in their own towns. Each local group is moderated by a local volunteer.

Membership is free.
How does it work?
When you want to find a new home for something — whether it’s a chair, a fax machine, piano, or an old door — you simply send an e-mail offering it to members of the local Freecycle group. Milton Keynes now has nearly 2,000 members!

Or, maybe you’re looking to acquire something yourself. Simply respond to a member’s offer, and you just might get it. After that, it’s up to the giver to decide who receives the gift and to set up a pickup time for passing on the treasure.

The main rule: Everything posted must be free, legal, and appropriate for all ages.

Freecycle’s goal, according the Web site, is to reduce waste by connecting people who are throwing away goods with others who are seeking the same goods. It’s a worldwide site aimed at keeping items out of landfills. All items must be free, and no trading or swapping is allowed. The forums are managed by a moderator, who makes sure the postings follow the rules. Members must live in the area and a certain format must be followed, such as listing the item as an “Offer,” “Wanted”

Check into Freecycle. Free cycle.org is a set of more than 3,500 free e-mail lists around the country. You post an item you want to give away — pieces must be free, legal and appropriate for all ages — and somebody who wants it will contact you to pick it up.

Unconventional channels (eBay, consignment/thrift stores, online swap shops such as Freecycle.org and different charities) have prom gowns from $0 to $300 and up. One local charity — Becca’s Closet — hands out free prom dresses and formal wear to teenagers in need. I highly recommend this Plantation-based program for teens seeking assistance with prom wear.
