SMITHFIELD, N.C. — Following the lead of municipal recycling efforts, grassroots organizations have sprung up nationwide in which people hand over items they no longer want to people who can’t wait to have them.
The “freecycling” movement has chapters nationwide, including several in the Triangle with more than 9,000 members combined. People simply sign up online and post what they want to give away or obtain. The person who wants an item must arrange to pick it up.
“A lot of people throw out perfectly good stuff that can be used again,” said Ric Schooler, one of about 600 Johnston County residents in a local freecycle group.
