Recycle with Freecycle
An innovative scheme based on the ethos of ‘one man’s rubbish is another man’s gold’ has spread from Tucson, Arizona to being a worldwide service. Freecycle (www.freecycle.org) started 3 years ago in the United States, boasting an estimated global network of 2million members including a strong membership here in the UK.
The web-based service, which has been likened to a “cyberspace car-boot sale”, is potentially contributing towards a reduction of items sent to landfill the East Midlands. The volunteer-led service allows people to give and take items on offer: saving landfill and money (and space in the office or at home). For example, that the Nottingham group, founded in June 2004, has divided into Mansfield, Beeston and Nottingham to accommodate its current 3,500 members, demonstrates Freecycle’s value and popularity.
