One person’s trash can be another person’s treasure.

That’s the premise fueling the Akron Freecycle Movement, a fast-growing, computer-based grass-roots group of reusers.

Members pass their used and unwanted items to others to keep the stuff out of landfills.

Kansas City Star | 07/28/2006 | Too good to toss? Freecycle it
New, the pool would have cost her about $1,500, she said.

She got it free.

Or, you could say, a man freecycled it to her.

Freecycle. It’s a noun, a verb and a way of life for some. It’s a nonprofit organization that allows individuals to share and receive unwanted items too good for the landfill, all for free, using e-mail.

Montreal Mirror : Restaurants : Pearl of Manila
On a recent expedition to Decarie to collect a bamboo tray I scored from Freecycle, I realized there remain traces of the quarter’s old charm, from the time before it was so brutally divided by the expressway. Among my discoveries was the Pearl of Manila on Decarie proper, between Côte-Ste-Catherine and Van Horne. A Filipino joint like this is a rare find in Montreal…..

ContraCostaTimes.com | 07/26/2006 | Net offers a way to shed your extra belongings

WHO DOESN’T HAVE LOTS of extra stuff taking up valuable space — whether it’s extra bricks from a home project, once-loved stuffed animals that your kids don’t need anymore, futons, extra appliances, dishes, office equipment — we all have so much stuff!

Then, when we finally want to get rid of it, it’s such a hassle. Garage sales are so much work. Putting it on the curb can be tacky. Thrift stores don’t always want your leftovers, and if you put the stuff in the garbage you feel guilty.

Enter CV Freecycle, a Web-based sort of swap meet where your useable items can find a new home with someone else. Think cyber swap, think flea market without the walking around — whatever, it’s a win-win for you and the environment since all that stuff stays out of the landfill and someone gets something they need for free.

Don’t Toss Your Junk — Freecycle It | theledger.com

Freecycle. I heard about the Freecycle movement a couple of years ago, but wasn’t anticipating it would reach Polk County very soon.

Well, people sometimes surprise you. Freecyle is now as close as your computer.

Fire leaves family homeless

Members of Chappel’s family have already started to help replace the Jacobs’s belongings. They’re posting requests on the Freecycle Saint John website asking people to donate what they can.

A cracking deal
Funny, though, how advances in communication can evoke a bygone era. Website freecycle.org has got people grouping together in towns and communities to find homes for belongings they no longer need. Apparently there are more than 1800 members in Aberdeen.
Taking my own little stand against the throwaway society, I recently exchanged my Renault 5 for half a dozen truly free-range eggs. They were bright yellow when scrambled on hot buttered toast, and tasted fantastic.

Deron Beal is occasionally tempted by the riches his Internet empire has made available for free.
Just this month, he could have had his pick of a dwarf albino hamster, 15 feeder mice or two well-behaved rats.
He might have scored a 7-foot fake ficus, a huge Pooh bear, a Tiffany lamp, a half bag of dog food or a full bag of rags — all offered for free on the Tucson Freecycle site he created three years ago.

Want a camper or a kayak?

What about lawn furniture? A computer? Or a washer/dryer?

Here’s the clincher: They’re all free.

And that’s just a sampling of items recently offered on Freecycle Cape Cod, an Internet bulletin board where people can post their willingness to recycle just about anything instead of taking it to the dump.
