It’s good to offer and receive - Wicked Local Plymouth - Life in Plymouth
Summer brings out many things: cookouts, outdoor activities and yard sales! I have found it amazing each and every weekend the many signs posted on the telephone poles about various yard sales. While making the extra money from your discarded treasures is worthy of your efforts, I would like to suggest an alternative for Plymouth residents. This alternative is a way for people to get rid of their unwanted treasures and find homes for them with people who are in search of those particular items. The same goes in reverse: requesting of items that you might need, without cost.

How is this done, you might ask? There is a group online called www.freecycle.org. The Freecycle Network™ is made up of many individual groups across the globe. It’s a grassroots and entirely nonprofit movement of people who are giving (& getting) stuff for free in their own towns. The Freecycle Network was started in May 2003 to promote waste reduction in Tucson’s downtown and help save desert landscape from being taken over by landfills. The network provides individuals and non-profits an electronic forum to “recycle” unwanted items. One person’s trash can truly be another’s treasure!

The newly formed Plymouth Freecycle™ group is open to all who want to “recycle” that special something rather than throw it away. Whether it’s a chair, a fax machine, piano or an old door, feel free to post it. Or maybe you’re looking to acquire something yourself! Nonprofit groups are also welcome to participate too!

To sign up, send an email to: FreecyclePlymouthMA-subscribe@yahoogroups.com
One main rule: everything posted must be free. This group is part of The Freecycle Network, a nonprofit organization and a movement of people interested in keeping good stuff out of landfills.

“You can give away whatever you have that you don’t want - it’s all over the country, just type in your zip code. It’s like eBay without the prices,” he says. “When I got my organic cotton mattress from Gaiam, I put up my old high-quality conventional mattress on Freecycle and it was picked up the next day.”

TOPEKA, Kan. - One man’s trash really can be another’s treasure.

A Topeka group is proving it through Freecycle, an online trading club whose local membership is growing fast.

“Our goal is to keep things out of landfills that are still good and useful, plus, to help people out,” said Larry Crouse, who leads the local group. “I have things I don’t use anymore but are still good and still useful. It’s also a good way to free my inner pack rat.”

Recycle with Freecycle

An innovative scheme based on the ethos of ‘one man’s rubbish is another man’s gold’ has spread from Tucson, Arizona to being a worldwide service. Freecycle (www.freecycle.org) started 3 years ago in the United States, boasting an estimated global network of 2million members including a strong membership here in the UK.

The web-based service, which has been likened to a “cyberspace car-boot sale”, is potentially contributing towards a reduction of items sent to landfill the East Midlands. The volunteer-led service allows people to give and take items on offer: saving landfill and money (and space in the office or at home). For example, that the Nottingham group, founded in June 2004, has divided into Mansfield, Beeston and Nottingham to accommodate its current 3,500 members, demonstrates Freecycle’s value and popularity.

GIVE AWAY OLD ITEMS: After having lost almost everything in Hurricane Wilma, I joined an online group called Freecycle (www.freecycle.org), which has chapters in most cities. Members list things of value that they no longer need. No money changes hands, everything is free.

I was able to give things away I don’t use anymore and have received some amazing items that have helped us to slowly work on getting our home back together. – Jeanie, e-mail
