Shed junk, find jewels at freecycle.org | TheNewsTribune.com | Tacoma, WA

It’s the fun and the curse of an affluent society. It’s the dusty secret stored in mega-closets. It’s the filler in landfills.

And it’s the secret behind the success of www.freecycle.org, a 100 percent volunteer, nonprofit, stuff-intensive, computer-driven network.

Making good use of unwanted items

Making good use of unwanted items

I belong to a group called Freecycle - you might have heard of it nationally - but there are local chapters all over.

The concept behind Freecycling is basically that of recycling goods by giving them to people who need them, for free. But, rather than trying to pawn off old video games or shoes that never fit or rarely used appliances on your friends and neighbors, this gives you a wider range of people to offer to.

To look at it another way (or, as my wife would say, the right way) there are two kinds of people in this world: Sane people and people like me.
Editor’s note: For those who can’t bear to see items with life left in them go to a landfill, there is help. Visit www.freecycle.org

Green Group Signs Up 500th Member (from Redditch Advertiser)
Green group signs up 500th member

ENVIRONMENTAL group Redditch Freecycle is celebrating after its membership reached 500 only six months after it was formed.

The group is part of the worldwide and rapidly expanding Freecycle Network, whose goal is to keep usable items out of landfill.

The network matches people who have things they want to get rid of with people who can use them and is made up of more than 3,000 individual groups across the globe.
continued…

Redditch Freecycle’s Andy Griffin said hundreds of items had been re-homed since the group was formed, including furniture, electrical goods, building materials and toys.

“People are often too busy to hold a car boot sale or sell their unwanted items in the small ads, so a lot of good stuff ends up at Crossgates and sent to landfill,” he said.

“It takes just a few seconds to post a message on Freecycle and someone will soon collect the item from your door.”

Get it for free - Freecycle

An environmentally friendly and cheap alternative to auctions sites, is Freecycle. Here members ‘recycle’ goods they’d otherwise have thrown out, in other words they’re given away free to someone else in the group. Some off the stuff is junk, some are top notch goods from generous people.

In fact it isn’t a website in itself, it’s run via Yahoo group emails which is highly localised so you become a part of your area’s own Freecycle. You’ll then receive e-mails when someone near you wants to get rid of their stuff.

As the scheme gets more popular, members can get hundreds of emails a week, so it’s a good idea to set up a new email account solely for Freecycle. When something takes your fancy simply email back and arrange to pick it up. Though it’s Freecycle etiquette to email an offer when you first join; nothing is too small.

Chillicothe Constitution-Tribune: Local News

We’ve all heard the saying, “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure,” and this rings true for many area individuals who are members of a network which promotes recycling your old goods.

The Chillicothe MO Area Freecycle Network is a local group which is affiliated with The Freecycle Network, a nationwide idea which is made up of many individual groups across the globe. It is a grassroots and entirely non-profit movement of people who are giving and getting stuff for free in their own towns.

50 great ideas for the 21st century
Google, satellite navigation, Equitrade, screw-top wine… these inventions and concepts will change our lives forever. But what inspires their creators? To introduce our round-up of 50 great ideas for the 21st century, Stephen Bayley examines the history and theory of how sparks of genius are formed

43. The Freecycle Network

Like a sort of hippy eBay, www.freecycle.org takes that auction house’s notion that one man’s trash is another man’s treasure, and simply removes the auction bit from the equation. TFN (The Freecycle Network) is a global set of city and town-specific online noticeboards, each one offering unwanted items for free. No money ever changes hands, and it’s up to the giver to decide who receives the gift and set a time for the “winner” to collect their booty. There’s only one rule: that everything posted must be free, legal and appropriate for all ages. A further feelgood factor comes from an option to give unwanted stuff to a non-profit organisation - hence the “free cycle of giving”. TFN was started in May 2003 in Arizona to promote waste reduction and reduce landfills. Today, it comprises over 2.5million members in 3,700 groups all over the world - there are 326 groups in the UK alone. Long may it run. JD

The Raw Story | Group allows reuse of items you’d toss
Freecycle. It’s a noun, a verb and a way of life for some. It’s a nonprofit organization that allows individuals to share and receive unwanted items too good for the landfill, all for free, using e-mail.

London – Not as expensive as you thought : Moneyweb

Living in the UK- especially London – is expensive compared to many places in the world.

It was ranked 5th among 144 cities in the Mercer’s Human Resource Consulting’s Cost of Living Survey. But what does this mean for your savings if you are moving across to the UK?

When furnishing your house, look out for an internet site www.freecycle.com. Here people from all over the local area post adverts for stuff they want to get rid of, such as desks, chairs, old TV’s, all for free. All you have to do is collect it yourself. I know it might sound dodgy but it works.
