Fairfield resident Cathy McElroy wanted to dress up her husband, Mike, as a nun.Their 5-year-old daughter Cecilia was going out for Halloween as “Madeline,” the French schoolgirl from Ludwig Bemelmans’ eponymous children’s books. And someone had to play Madeline’s schoolmarm nun, Miss Clavel. “I said, ‘Look Mike, you’re going to be Miss Clavel,’ ” recalls Cathy McElroy.

So the 41-year-old schoolteacher turned to Freecycle.org, an online network that literally helps turn one person’s junk into another person’s treasure.
