Freecycling: Converting trash to treasure - Beverly Citizen

Freecycling: Converting trash to treasure - Beverly Citizen

Last summer I suggested that parents unite to redistribute their oversized and underused plastic toys. I recommended some system that involved signal flags if I recall. A friend remarked, “You know Esther, www.freecycle.org already does that — except they are online and you don’t have to create, umm, special flags.”

So I checked it out. Sure enough I found a huge virtual sidewalk of stuff that people no longer want but are happy to give away — for free.

The mission of freecycle is to create a “worldwide gifting movement to ease waste and . . . reduce the burden on landfills.” All it takes is a Yahoo account and an email and you too can swap unwanted debris.

Reduce, reuse, freecycle

GLADSTONE — Aware of my frugal nature, a friend told me about Freecycle.org. The site unites the concept of recycling with my favorite word: free.

Consisting of close to four thousand groups worldwide, Freecycle helps people find homes for useful items they no longer want. Needless to say (though I’ll say it to reach my word count quota), the recipient benefits as well.

After signing up with their local guild, members receive e-mailed notices of this, that, and the other thing being given away in their area. From furniture to fitness gear to Fido, all manner of merchandise passes hands, INCLUDING the kitchen sink.

Ely Freecycle celebrated its first birthday earlier this month, according to freecycle organizer April Strom.
Strom said there are 160 members on the Ely net, and items that have changed hands thanks to freecycle include computer equipment, old shirts, books, magazines, exercise equipment, fabric, shingles, beds, dishes, clothing, and even touch up paint for a vehicle.
The Ely network is one of nearly 4,000 worldwide, with more than 3 million members. The first freecycle group formed in 2003. The largest group is one in Portland, Ore., sporting more than 26,000 members.
While Ely’s membership is of course more humble in numbers, the mission remains the same — keeping useful things out of landfills.

Waste Management supports expanded recycling

Not only does Waste Management provide convenient curbside recycling programs, but it is also involved in two community recycling programs to help people maximize their recycling: Freecycle and Recycle by Mail.

“It’s easy to recycle, and you have more recyclable items around your household than you may realize,” said Steve Wolfe, District Manager of Waste Management of Washington County.

New Haven Register - No, they’re not crazy; if freecyclers have something you need, it’s yours for the asking
Your money’s no good here, friends. Barbara Sloan is giving her stuff away, and she won’t hear of taking cash for it.

But she and her buddies will happily take some of your stuff, if it’s something they want.

Sloan, a freelance writer who lives in Wallingford, is chief moderator of an online group called Freecycle New Haven, whose members offer everything from cars and kitchenware to pianos and plants — which they want to get rid of for free. The local group has about 3,400 members and there are thousands of other Freecycle groups worldwide, with some 3.1 million members. Connecticut alone has dozens of Freecycle groups, including Milford, Cheshire and Shelton

Freecycle makes a business of giving things away
HUNTINGTON — The Freecycle Network has come to the Tri-State.

The nonprofit grass-roots movement, which is in more than 3,900 cities around the world, is designed to transfer someone’s “trash” to another person who deems it a “treasure” — all in the name of keeping more piles of junk out of a landfill.

“We’ve had furniture, electronics, egg cartons, grocery sacks, bulk food jars, any items one person doesn’t want and will offer to members of the community who might be able to use them,” says Christine Newton, co-owner and moderator of Huntington, W.Va., Freecycle. “It can include everything from A to Z — including the kitchen sink.”

Members of Freecycle.org help N.H. family after fire - Boston.com

A Christmas Eve fire left the Kearney family homeless and destroyed almost everything they owned. A friend put a posting on Freecycle, and since then the Kearneys have gotten donations of furniture, clothing and gift cards from Freecycle members.

They might even get a new home. A salesman at a car dealership in Plymouth has offered the Kearneys a two-bedroom mobile home that came with a piece of land he’s buying.

Something for nothing
When Roberta Longtine moved to Casper a few years ago, she had several items she wanted to get rid of.

They didn’t fit into her smaller house, but she didn’t want to throw them away.

Being a newcomer, she didn’t know anyone in town, so she turned to Freecycle, a Web site where people give and get things for free. She became a member of the Casper group, which now includes more than 500 members, listed her items on the site and has participated ever since.
