Ely Freecycle celebrated its first birthday earlier this month, according to freecycle organizer April Strom.
Strom said there are 160 members on the Ely net, and items that have changed hands thanks to freecycle include computer equipment, old shirts, books, magazines, exercise equipment, fabric, shingles, beds, dishes, clothing, and even touch up paint for a vehicle.
The Ely network is one of nearly 4,000 worldwide, with more than 3 million members. The first freecycle group formed in 2003. The largest group is one in Portland, Ore., sporting more than 26,000 members.
While Ely’s membership is of course more humble in numbers, the mission remains the same — keeping useful things out of landfills.
