Freecycle’s very own Deron Beal on ABC News!

Founder and executive director Deron Beal told ABC News Now that FreeCycle.org “is a Web site kind of like a free eBay, where people can give things away that to them are trash which might be treasure to someone else in their local community.”

Giving away stuff that you no longer need but can’t sell or give to charity might not seem like a big deal but according to Beal, FreeCycle.org has kept four times the height of Mount Everest out of landfills in the past year alone.

Though Haenel has become acquainted with several people out of state, one of her online groups, the Beloit-Stateline Freecycle.org community, connected her with someone much closer to home.

Of the 752 members, one was giving away some clothes, Haenel recalled, saying she took the woman up on it. It turned out the lady lived across the street.

“I had no clue,” Haenel said.

Gardening can be done cheaply By Bill Spencer

The truth is, it doesn’t have to cost you a lot to make your garden gorgeous, says Sue Williams, the Frugal Gardner. “Most of my plants are from somewhere else, and I haven’t paid any money for them. I’ve traded for them, and I’ve scoured them up from places,” Williams says

One of her favorite places to find free plants is online at popular sites such as craigslist.com and freecycle.com. At sites like these, you can post blogs, ask other gardeners specifically for what you need, or ask other gardeners what they want to get rid of. Either way, get ready for a huge response.

Scavenger hunt By Murray Whyte

Meet the city’s unsung heroes of green living – the garbage-pickers who take our cast-offs, junk and empty bottles…

She lay on the sidewalk for a week or more, waiting, as her companions were picked up and whisked away – boxes of plastic hangers, china plates, glassware, lamp shades, a desk, a dresser, a wooden fragment of undetermined purpose, puzzled over briefly by a postal worker, but claimed nonetheless.

Bartering for convenience but with altruistic intent By Murray Whyte

“Freecycle very much is about saving items from landfill, which in itself is a huge benefit, but it’s also much more than that,” wrote a woman named Vera, one of the Toronto freecycling group’s online moderators.

“But it is totally a group effort,” she adds. “The group makes it work, not any one individual. Without people to give items and others to take them, there would be no resultant benefit to our environment or to one another.”

Freegans by The Skip Magazine

Filed under: News Articles, Recycling Info, UK — Julia @ 1:35 pm

In the dead of night, a small army of Britons rifle through bins and skips in search of food, clothing and furniture. These self-styled “Freegans” discover feasts of slightly damaged food and bargain basement clothes discarded and forgotten, all waiting for landfill. This isn’t a passing student fad, but a full-frontal assault on our wasteful consumer culture.

Change homes without evicting the environment

Filed under: US West Coast, News Articles — Julia @ 11:59 am

Moving day.

Time to lighten the load. Reorganize. Get a fresh, clean start at a new place.

But what if that fresh start is at the expense of the environment?

In addition to organizations such as the Salvation Army and Goodwill, Mitchell said movers also might want to consider “freecycling” their excess belongings at www.freecycle.org. Created in 2003 in Tucson, Ariz., Freecycle is a network of more than 3,000 online groups worldwide that help people give away stuff they no longer want or need. The network has more than 11,000 members in the Chicago area alone.
