Nonprofits net a big return in competition

It may not have drawn the national attention of television’s “American Idol,” but the NetSquared Innovation Awards last week at Cisco headquarters in San Jose profited from healthy competition among nonprofit groups seeking to use technology to better the world.

The winners of the competition, which combined an online voting process and intense in-person campaigning, were judged on the basis of technological innovation, financial sustainability and social benefit. The 21 finalists were selected from a field of 152 nominees. The top three projects are:
