Freecycle Moderator Receives 2007 Community Recycler of the Year Award

Tracy Owens, moderator of the Springfield Freecycle Network, has been awarded the
2007 Community Recycler of the Year award by the Sangamon County Department of
Public Health Recycling Division.

Bulkier items can be disposed of on the Freecycle website. This wonderful site allows people to post their unwanted items for free, and other members who need them volunteer to take them away. I recently disposed of my dehumidifier within a fortnight after my new wood-burner eliminated my household damp.

Nonprofits net a big return in competition

It may not have drawn the national attention of television’s “American Idol,” but the NetSquared Innovation Awards last week at Cisco headquarters in San Jose profited from healthy competition among nonprofit groups seeking to use technology to better the world.

The winners of the competition, which combined an online voting process and intense in-person campaigning, were judged on the basis of technological innovation, financial sustainability and social benefit. The 21 finalists were selected from a field of 152 nominees. The top three projects are:

Freecycle Diaries: Desperately seeking boxes By Natasha Lomas

Welcome to the second instalment of the Freecycle Diaries, in which Natasha Lomas puts the web giveaway service to the test - and shares her experiences, for better and for worse. Today she searches for some moving boxes - and finds a whole lot more.

I’m moving flats again so my first act as I get reacquainted with the weird and wonderful world of Freecycle is to post a wanted message. I’m desperately seeking some boxes so I can pack up my things. It’s not much to ask but if Freecycle can’t help me locate a load of old cardboard I will have to resort to street scavenging on bin day. Not my idea of fun.

I post my wanted message and in less than an hour I have two replies.
