Through Freecycle, an online network where people give and collect unwanted items to “keep good stuff out of landfills,” John collected hundreds of items to fuel his allotment needs.
“I was browsing the web and saw this story about how a man in Tuscon set it up and I was intrigued by the whole Freecycle thing,” said John, of Victoria Road, Fulwood.
ILION — When Ruth Hall of Ilion heard about the Freecycle Network, a national nonprofit organization “free-market,” so to speak, she was thrilled to be able to help others and rid her closets of unwanted items at the same time.
The concept of Freecycle, she said, uses the power of the Internet to connect local individuals looking to give something away with those who would like to acquire it; no strings or fees attached.
“Rather than throwing things away and adding to the volume of trash in landfills, Freecycle helps keep over 200 tons of would-be garbage out of landfills every day, equaling the amount of a mid-sized landfill,” she said.

While Sams Valley resident Sheri Barnes had used the Medford Freecycle group to give and get everything from used clothes and appliances to old furniture and fall veggies, she drew the line at personal information.
With Barnes and fellow group moderator America Fucci at the helm, and following suit with Freecycle groups around the country, some 900 former Medford “freecyclers” recently broke away to form Rogue Valley Recyclers, registered under the ReUseIt Network (www.reuseitnetwork.org).

Some time ago, I joined Freecycle (http://www.freecycle.org), an online community that’s sort of an organized form of curb-picking. Its members share their castoffs to keep them out of landfills.
You’re allowed to post items you want to give away or items you’d like to have, but you’re not allowed to charge for them. It’s a great way to clean out the basement, meet some nice people and, if you’re lucky, find some real gems.

Freecycle.org is a Web site with local links that allows members to give used items away for one low price: free.
“(Freecycle.org) kind of reminds me of that movie, ‘Pay it Forward—’ it’s all over,” he said.

EVEN though industry and governments are going to have to make earth-shaking changes to cool things down, there’s plenty we can to do help. The basics of reducing our individual carbon footprints are to do what Henry David Thoreau said: “Simplify, simplify.” We’ll all live better with less-processed, packaged and industrially produced stuff carted here from across the planet.

A letter to the editor of The Daily News Journal, Murfreesboro, TN…
Instead of passing our waste to others or futilely watching it pile up, I think that we should take steps as a community to reduce the amount of waste that we generate. Remember reduce, reuse and recycle?
…Freecycle.org is an organization that helps people pass along useful free things to other people, and there is a Murfreesboro group already established. These are just a few ways to reduce the amount of material that is sent to our landfill. There are many, many more.
Worcestershire County Council is pointing people towards Freecycle - a website that passes on a wide-range of goods including tumble dryers, televisions, clothes, curtains, carpets and bedding put on there by people who do not want them anymore.
The county council supports the website as a part of its Waste Reduction Strategy.
