The act of dropping furniture curbside or visiting apartment dumpsters for new lamps is alive and well in Davis - and with moving day nigh, it’s about to hit peak season.

Dumpster diving, as the practice is commonly called, is legal so long as the goods remain on private property - that’s just up to the sidewalk curb, said Sue Gedestad, operations administrator for the City of Davis.

Tracy McGrath of Marlboro never liked to throw anything in the garbage.

“It always bothers me throwing things away,” she said. “It kills me, on trash day, seeing all those bags.”

Mrs. McGrath said her family has always been in “recycle mode,” but she still looked for ways to be more environmentally friendly. So when she heard about an online group called Freecycle, she said it was “right up our alley.”
