“When I set it up, it was purely as a functional tool to keep good stuff out of landfills,” said Beal, who now lives in Tucson, Ariz. “It’s grown into a grass-roots effort by people who give and receive items for free in their local communities. I’ve been flabbergasted by the growth of the network.”
The (Freecycle) York group has 6,000 members and this is growing by 100 a week. Most will be eco-aware and not all of them skint or on their uppers. “There is no particular type… it’s mums and students to retired people, who all agree that stuff shouldn’t end up in a big hole,” says Ben Weaver…
Recently, I joined a group through yahoo, freecycle. You join, offer a free item to begin and get cleaning your house, or as in my case, you clean your house then add more junk that you find on freecycle.
If you’re anything like me, I read the posted items and think, ‘gee, I could really use that’.

Sharon McNatt can’t recall how much money she has saved by using Freecycle.org. She never buys clothing items for her four children, who range in age from 13 months to 11. She’s also gotten food, furniture and other home items from the Web site, at no cost to her.

Freecycle members from Moberly help family in need…
Tramontine sprang to action. She posted the family’s story along with a list of needed supplies on a local Yahoo! message board, Freecycle Moberly. Within days she had received 130 e-mails and about 26 phone calls. People were offering everything from chopped firewood to bug spray and propane.
Climate Friendly Communities Northamptonshire will encourage youth groups, villagers, community organisations and groups of neighbours to get together to see how they can help make the county a greener place.
The scheme, backed by every local council in the county, will be launched with a two-hour workshop at Rockingham Motor Speedway on Tuesday, October 16.
Sara Patterson helps run Corby and Kettering Freecycle, She said: “This sounds a really good idea and I’m interested to find out more. Community groups can make such a difference in their own neighbourhood, and hopefully the conference will help get ideas flowing and new groups launched.”
