Fake firs from the middle of the 20th century that once looked high-tech have made a retro comeback. Dressing up an old one can be relatively eco-friendly, whether it sports flocked snow, aluminum branches, or ceramic gumdrops. The Doris Day aesthetics might irk some neighbors, but at least you’d do the planet a favor by keeping a used, imitation pine out of a landfill. Options abound on Freecycle, eBay, Craigslist. Need a ski rack, fertilizer spreader or ferret cage? You might be able to nab it for nothing at the online bulletin board Freecycle.org. The Freecycle Network™ is a community-based service made up of 4,182 groups with 4,130,000 members across the globe. It’s a grassroots and entirely nonprofit movement of people who are giving and getting stuff for free in their own towns. Each local group is moderated by a local volunteer. Freecycle.org, for example, started in 2003 to help people “gift” unwanted stuff to strangers and help keep the landfills free of items that could easily be reused. Now the site has more than 4,000 local Yahoo groups, whose 4 million-plus members give away goods in 75 countries. In San Francisco, for example, the number of messages posted to the group has grown from 37 in January 2004 to more than 2,400 in the same period this year. It’s that time of year when just about everyone is shopping for that perfect present.
For Fayetteville shoppers, there’s now another way to find those holiday gifts: the freecycle swap meet.
Though TreeHugger prefers Buy Nothing Day to the sheer madness of Black Friday, that doesn’t mean you have to live with less or even that you can’t acquire stuff; a great way to do this is with something like The Freecycle Network (it really works!). The big day has passed, but the Network rolls on, and remains a good way to both find and get rid of stuff without having to involve any money.
…when you receive unwanted gifts, as will inevitably happen this Christmas, see if someone else might like them by posting them on www.freecycle.org.
On Saturday people with the Fayetteville/Fort Bragg Freecycle chapter, who usually only interact online, had a chance to talk directly to the people their swapping items with.
“They’re not giving away trash to people, it’s very beneficial” said group member Chrystal Tendell.
Tendell, a single mom of four, picked up clothes and shoes for her own kids and for another single parent.
“It’s great, especially when you don’t have. Anything’s better then nothing, you know, it’s wonderful and most of the things you get are in great condition” she said.
