Elizabeth Schulz of Bridgewater considered forgoing holiday lights this year to further her environmental causes. She already drives a Toyota Prius and heads the Somerset County branch of Freecycle.org, an online community of people exchanging items so they won’t end up in landfills. However, Schulz worried it would be “kind of ‘Grinch-y’ to not have lights up.”

Freecycle computers get a second chance By Marci Huggins

About 25 computers will be given away Saturday at the first Freecycle Swap Day.

Michael Elliott, co-founder of the Fayetteville/Fort Bragg area (Freecycle) group, says he collects computer parts throughout the year. He and his wife, Rene, refurbish and paint them, and ready them in time for parents to have something under the tree for their children at Christmas.

Were those 23 carrier bags really necessary? Suzanne Whiting

I HAVE a few points to make with regards to recycling (yes, again!).
Firstly, I had my shopping delivered the other week and was stunned that the shop in question felt it neccesary to use 23, yes 23, carrier bags!

Some of the bags had only one or two items in them.

I would have needed 10 at most (I reuse mine).

One of them is Freecycle, a grassroots, nonprofit Web community that originated among friends in Arizona in 2003. It now has more than 4,000 groups and 4 million members worldwide. A Freecycle group in Hastings is also doing its best to improve the environment. It is a worldwide gifting movement that reduces waste and eases the burden on landfills. So far nearly 300 members have signed up.
