For those more interested in ridding themselves of unwanted stuff than making some cash, there is Freecycle.org, a Web site that connects local users who have unwanted goods with those in search of those items.

Founder Deron Beal sees a rise in activity on the free-trade site after New Year’s Eve, with “lots of Santa socks and ties” up for grabs. Later on, he said, there are “plenty of abdominizers.”
