Anyone want a 52-inch widescreen TV - for free?

When Debbie Hughes of Davidson County saw that ad online, she went after it. Although the TV was broken, she paid for repairs and the set now sits in her home.

“We got a 55-inch widescreen TV that cost us $208 dollars,” Hughes said.

She got the TV through Freecycle.org, a network of groups of people who exchange all sorts of stuff - without exchanging money.

Red Ginger Home and Athlete’s Alley, among others, have come through with the squeaky little buggers. Through Freecycle.org, an online swap meet for free stuff, Arlene got in touch with somebody in Ocean Township who had a nice stash, which she picked up on Friday while running an errand.

Also through Freecyle, she recently heard from “a guy in Brick who has a trailerful he wants to give us,” she says.

Daily Camera: WEB SITE:Freecycle

Freecycle.org. Watch out Craigslist. Freecycle has a similar principle as Craigslist’s “wanted” and “free” sections, but we think it’s more easily organized. And it will e-mail you updates, so you don’t have to keep refreshing the page. This grassroots, nonprofit Web site is all about sharing (aw, so sweet), and keeping stuff out of landfills. Membership is free, with more than 4 million users. Best of all, it’s an easy way to get free stuff — and get rid of junk you no longer need.

Gather items that were replaced with holiday gifts like clothes, appliances or decorations. Sort them into separate piles: things you can donate to a thrift store, things you can recycle and things to just be trashed or given away for free on freecycle .org or craigslist.org.

Freecycling. Think giving things away for free. It’s essentially recycling useful items rather than throwing them away and adding them to the local landfill.

Freecycling is a members-only club, but the only requirement is to live in the community that’s served by the online group you join.

YumaSun.com: Yumans turn to Freecycle to reduce waste

Filed under: US Southwest, News Articles, Recycling Info, The Web — Fiona @ 6:28 pm

Armed with everything from baby clothes to old sofas, people all over Yuma say they’re having fun changing the world - one freebie at a time.

They all belong to an international recycling movement built around lessons that mom taught us: It’s better to give than to receive, helping others feels good, and one person’s junk is another’s treasure.

That’s the magic of Freecycle.

POSTSTAR.com: Glens Falls: Out with the old cell phone, responsibly

Filed under: US Northeast, Recycling Info, Blog, The Web — Fiona @ 6:22 pm

Giving it away, on the other hand, has the good karma advantage. My mom was happy to take my decade-old phone. She’s not very tech savvy, so the fact that it has no special options suited her fine. Arranging to give your phone to a local person for free can be managed easily through Freecycle or The Post-Star’s Take My Stuff connection. Both sites are online message boards where members post their useful but no longer wanted items for locals to take for free.
