Iowa City Press-Citizen: Reuse or recycle items filling up the house

Leah Dorzweiler reports on Freecycle’s very own Iowa City group.

Now that the commotion of the holiday season has died down, many people might be wondering, how am I going to make room for all this new stuff?

Iowa City Freecycle Network offers a moderated, online system to reuse all items locally. “Sign up to post items to give away or watch the boards for that treasure you’ve been seeking,” Jordan says of the Web site at www.freecycle.org/group/UnitedStates/Iowa/IowaCity.

David Deans reports on Climate change clicks…Yahoo has declared 2007 the year people stopped talking about climate change and started doing something about it. The internet search firm has ranked the top ten environmental searches.

Top search queries included Al Gore’s movie “An Inconvenient Truth”, “carbon footprint” and “stop global warming”. Hybrid cars, solar energy and recycling programmes were also on the end of many a finger tip, as was the recycling site Freecycle.org.

Shannon Davidson reports on a”Freecycle Angel” from Lebanon County, PA

The gift of giving is extending well beyond the holidays in one Lebanon County community.One woman helped brighten the spirits of dozens of kids for Christmas, and her generosity is spilling over into the New Year.

Etzweiler with some help from her little elves went onto the Freecycle website to find out whom in her area needed toys for Christmas. And thanks to the eight truck loads of new and gently used toys and stuffed animals donated by her mother, she was able to put a smile on many faces.

OnlineAthens: Trash becomes treasure at Freecycle

Don Nelson reports that Freecycle is also flourishing in a town by the name of Athens, U.S.

“I have a little bit of the ‘green,’ hippie chick in me, and this makes me feel a lot better,” said the 26-year-old Bishop, who lives in Winder and has been involved with Freecycle for about a year and a half. “If you think long term about the planet and where we’re headed, this fulfills a need without everything going to landfills, because we’re not always going to have room for landfills.”

The Associated Press: Correction: Freecycle Flourishes story

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - In a Dec. 29 story about The Freecycle Network, The Associated Press reported erroneously that the international recycling program keeps more than 300 million tons of trash out of landfills every day. According to the group’s founder, the amount kept out of landfills last year is equivalent to 300 million pounds, or 400 tons per day.
