Thedollarstretcher.com: Clothing Expense Reduction

Filed under: The Web, All U.S., Newsletter — Julia @ 5:14 am

Michelle Giroux asks us How many alternatives do you know to buying clothes at full price?

There are hundreds of thousands of regional Freecycle groups throughout the country and around the world. The unifying policy for all of these individual groups is that no currency exchanges hands for any listed item on any Freecycle site.

The potential is that thousands of viewers check out Freecycle and other message board requests, making it plausible that someone has
or is able to locate what is being requested. Therefore, it is most effective to be specific when requesting items (clothing
in this case). Clearly state any company required brands, colors and styles.

Filed under: US Central, Recycling Info, The Web — Julia @ 4:57 am

Aubrey Vaughan writes…

Sometimes all that’s needed to relieve stress and create a fresh start is to clean out clutter and unwanted items.

For usable items…You can also offer your treasures for give-away on Freecycle. It’s a great way to find new homes for items that can’t be recycled or donated, and maybe find items that you do need, like that folding table for your daughter’s dorm room.

Times Online: The eco-friendly guide to home furnishings

Larger items can also be found cheaply. According to The Ecologist, 2.5 million tons of timber is removed from libraries, churches, hospitals, pubs and homes each year in the UK. Ten per cent of this is tropical hardwood, which comes from old growth forests that cannot be replaced. Save some 200-year-old trees by reusing them in the form of reclaimed wood. Older woods add individuality to a home with colours and textures that cannot be achieved from the newer pale woods. Look at www.salvo.co.uk (020-8400 6222) for wood dealers in your area; or at www.globaltrees.org for a national directory of reclaimed furniture suppliers (search under “furniture”); www.freecycle.org is a network of local online messageboards where people in your area advertise unwanted items that they are giving away.

Think of it as becoming your own public-relations machine. You can sit down and make a list of all the good things you do for the environment that your friends don’t even know about. You recycled your Christmas tree and got a seedling to plant in return? Donated money to a worthy environmental cause? Use your community’s freecycle-type program? Shop at Goodwill? Feed scraps to the dog rather than throw them in the garbage? Reuse that plastic dish from the fruit salad for this week’s potato salad?

South Manchester Reporter:Welcome to the modern day Swap Shop by Laura Thistlethwaite

Filed under: News Articles, Recycling Info, The Web, UK — Fiona @ 6:02 pm

IT’S all part of the great re-cycle of life. For one man’s junk can quite literally be another man’s treasure – if the buzz around the free-for-all websites Freecycle and RealCycle Manchester is anything to go by.

A mop and bucket, a flatbed scanner, flagstones, a 1970’s orange tent, three Jiffy bags and a brand new children’s quad bike ‘bought by grandparents as a very over-ambitious first birthday present’ - these probably go some way toward illustrating a mere selection of the weird and wonderful goods people want to give each other for FREE this week.
