WindsorJournal.com: Public invited to join ‘Green Committee’

Members of the public are invited to join a new “Green Committee” being launched by the Windsor Chamber of Commerce. The purpose of the committee will be to increase awareness and learn more about how businesses, residences and individuals can “go green” to help sustain the earth.

Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Jane Garibay said this week there is a wealth of information just waiting to be tapped. For example, she said, people can check out freecycle.com to give or acquire items for free.

WBTV: New Website Offers Great Way to Give Away Unwanted Items

When many of us have stuff to give away, we usually turn to the Salvation Army or the Goodwill.

Now there is another alternative catching on called Freecycle.org.

The purpose is to keep things out of the landfill, while still matching items with folks who can really use them.

WBTV’s Barbara Pinson explains in this On Your Side report.

KEPR CBS 19:New Twist on Recycling

There’s a new way to recycle that’s taking off. It’s called freecycling. People join a local online group to give away items they no longer need, and to get things they DO need. Consumer Reports Money Adviser explored the give and take of this unique recycling effort.

The goal of the Freecycle Network is to create a worldwide “gifting” movement in order to keep usable items out of landfills. Membership is free. Just go to freecycle.org to look for your local group, register, and soon you’ll be receiving e-mail messages telling you what’s “offered,” what’s “wanted,” and what has been “taken.” You’ll find everything from clothes to electronics, exercise equipment, and furniture.

Prince George Citizen: In a nutshell…

The spring cleaning season is a good time to explore the Freecycle web site which is moderated by REAPS in Prince George. The site at www.freecycle.org is an opportunity to post items no longer useful to yourself, but may be just what someone else needs. Jackie Rioux, an environmentally conscious resident, is hoping to promote awareness about the site, especially since the public swap sheds were closed last fall. She said as well as giving away many items like furniture, books and toys, she’s also claimed items like a hide-a-bed, toys and videos.

She added her daughter was able to find a washer-dryer set and a car to start out on her own.

“I just can’t let go of things and I don’t like throwing things in the garbage that might be useful” says Tampa Freecycle member Ree Gasher. Gasher uses the site to give and receive. Her apartment is filled with things she got from fellow members through the site. She hangs her keys on a used key rack. Her son sleeps on a donated twin bed. And she’s even been able to add to her doll collection.
