Cape Cod Times: Raising baby on a budget

KNOW WHERE TO LOOK

Finding great values starts with knowing where to hunt.

Single parent Jane Walsh of Hyannis, mom to 2-year-old Naomi, is a fan of Freecycle and Craigslist, two online listings that act as a free classifieds system (with Freecycle items actually being free).

“I got a crib and changing table, both for $50, from Craigslist Rhode Island. I would have loved to have found it on the Cape, but the Cape Cod Craigslist site was not established at that time. It is now,” Jane says. “I have also gotten a rocker/glider and lots of toys and books from Craigslist. I also got a toddler bed from Freecycle for free, which fits the same mattress as the crib, so I can just swap it over.”

COLUMBIA — Jeremy Santiago, 12, sits at the desk in his room; the light from the computer screen illuminates his face. He moves the mouse in his right hand, as math equations start to fall down the screen. Jeremy’s mother, Jeanette Santiago, watches her oldest son intently as he fills in answers to the problems.

Santiago home-schools her four children but until relatively recently hadn’t been able to use educational computer games with her curriculum. The Santiagos made trips to the library so the children could use the computers there. “We just couldn’t invest in a computer for the children,” Santiago said.

Palm Beach Post: FreeCycle: Digital converter box coupon holders can post giveaways

An online organization offering free merchandise, FreeCycle.org, is allowing people holding unused $40 digital television converter box coupons to use its website to give theirs away.

Frederick News Post: Katherine Heerbrandt Free! Really!

I just joined Frederick’s Freecycle Yahoo group, plotting to rid my house of extraneous “things.”

You know, the stuff that’s too good to toss — the stuff you store and say one day you’ll sell in a yard sale! If you’re like me, you’ve been saying that for so long your yard sale items have earned a room of their own. Where they sit, collecting dust and waiting for a loving home.
