Word of the exemption for used items was good news to Janel Scott, of Grand Chute, who sells used children’s clothing online. Scott also serves as a local moderator for freecycle.com, a site established to reduce the flow of unwanted items into landfills by allowing people to offer goods at no charge to other members.

Scott said about half of the recent posts on freecycle.com cited worries the new law would make it illegal for them to distribute used children’s goods.

“They were having a fit over this,” she said. “They couldn’t believe it.”
