BBC NEWS: Having a clear out?

If you’ve ever tried to furnish a house on a budget, you’ll know how hard it can be.

In the shops the price tag will invariably come to thousands of pounds.

But Nicola and Oliver Shelton do things differently at their North London home.

In their back garden, Nicola’s two daughters Daisy and Scarlett play on a set of swings. It’s one of the few large items in their home they’ve actually paid for.

Most of their household goods have come from fellow users of the Freecycle website - and those they no longer want are redistributed among the community in the same way.

From large items like the TV, fire guard, connecting doors, shelves and tables, to smaller more everyday objects like cement, weedkiller, an electric toothbrush, clothes hangers and even Nicola’s daughter’s cardigan, all were obtained for free.

What if there was a place you could find just about anything you need — for free? What if there was a cost-free way you could find someone who needs that old sofa you were thinking of taking to the dump?

What if you could clean out your garage or storage shed, just by telling people what was in it and waiting for them to come pick it up?

What if there was a way to promote environmental responsibility and a sense of community without leaving your home or spending a penny?

Believe it or not, there is.

EVENT PLYMOUTH UNIVERSITY 5/5/09

What? FreeTrade Boutique

Where? Roland Levinksy Building, Plymouth.

When? May 5th 2009.

Time? 12pm- 6pm.

Why? Help to reduce consumerism, manufacture fewer goods, and lessen
the impact on the earth and humanity.

On May 5th the Unbranded show will be hosting a FreeTrade Boutique as
part of a final year university project.

Simply bring along your unwanted clothing and trade them for FREE!

All are welcome, set to be a fun day and I would really appreciate
participants.
