POSTSTAR.com: Glens Falls: Out with the old cell phone, responsibly

Filed under: US Northeast, Recycling Info, Blog, The Web — Fiona @ 6:22 pm

Giving it away, on the other hand, has the good karma advantage. My mom was happy to take my decade-old phone. She’s not very tech savvy, so the fact that it has no special options suited her fine. Arranging to give your phone to a local person for free can be managed easily through Freecycle or The Post-Star’s Take My Stuff connection. Both sites are online message boards where members post their useful but no longer wanted items for locals to take for free.

A poster to the eco-australia blog has put together a helpful guide for maximising your recycling mojo and reducing the amount you put into landfill.

TELEGRAPH ONLINE: I don’t shop, therefore I am - Lila Das Guptas: Recycle of Life

Enter Freecycle (www.ukfreecycle.org), the online community of local groups that give things away - motto: “Changing the world, one gift at a time.” Freecycle is also an invaluable resource for those wanting a more recycle-friendly lifestyle. Need a strimmer for the allotment or a booster seat for the car? Put out a “wanted” sign on the website and the chances are that someone in your area has one going spare.

Green Your Gadgets… Or At Least Recycle Them By Mari Silbey

Filed under: Recycling Info, Blog, The Web, All U.S. — Fiona @ 7:32 pm

Freecycle
If you have a gadget that’s still in good shape, consider giving it away to someone who could use the hand-me-down. Freecycle is a Craigslist-type service, except you sign up just for your local region and it’s all free trade. You can list things you want and things you have to give away. Upgrading your laptop? Or your TV? Give away your old one on freecycle.

Give Mother Earth the holiday gift of freecycle.org. I have. by David Berlind

Freecycle.org seems to me to be the biggest of all the grassroots movements on the Web that seeks the Earth’s sustainability through re-use. The idea? Instead of throwing something out (perhaps something that can’t be picked up by the local recycling truck), post it on the Web to other members of your local Freecycle group as being free for the taking. Looking to get something for free? You can publish wanted ads too.

A friend of mine recently turned me on to the existence of the Freecycle group in my area. I’m not sure if all groups work the same but the one I’m a member of uses Yahoo Groups as the place to which four different types of posts get posted: OFFER, WANTED, TAKEN, RECEIVED. As a member of the group, I elect whether to have new posts forwarded to my inbox as they are posted to the Yahoo Group, or aggregated in summary form twice per day.Click here to read the blog in full

Several readers also mentioned Freecycle.org, in which people get and give back stuff with no money changing hands. I am unclear how it works, but it seems pretty cool. Not a seal of approval here, but check it out.Click here to read the article in full

• To get ready for a batch of new things, round up all the toys, clothes, tchatchkes, tools, appliances, and anything else you can think of that you no longer need or use. Fill boxes with them and give to Goodwill, NW Center, Value Village, consignment shops (where you might get a discount on future purchases), local shelters or give them away on Freecycle or Craig’s List.Click here to read the article in full

The Columbus group has 10,000 members across all social strata, from “The Bottoms” to New Albany, Jenn M. said. Most members likely found out about the group through word of mouth since she founded it in 2003.

“I don’t think I ever thought we would grow this much!” Jenn said.

Escambo virtual, Blog Planeta Sustentave Por Isabel Braga

Filed under: Blog, The Web, Brazil — Julia @ 6:23 pm
