As of last week, members were offering two twin mattresses, a vacuum cleaner and two cats. Many folks freecycle moving boxes. It’s good etiquette to reciprocate by offering up items you no longer need for free, as well.

Big Island Weekly: Freecycle Creates A Recycling Revolution

As the “green” movement picks up momentum on the Big Island and across the country, and our landfills start to spill over, public consciousness is growing about recycling and reusing what once was considered “trash.”

Recycle Hawai’i’s motto is “One person’s trash is another’s treasure,” and this philosophy is being practiced actively by over 2,000 people on the Big Island through the online group “Freecycle.”

According to the Freecycle Web site, the concept is simple: “You have something you no longer need and you wish to ‘recycle’ it rather than throw it into the garbage where eventually it will go to clutter our shrinking landfills. You can post items to give away, or make a request for wanted items, but the bottom line is that it has to be free!”

Ke Alakai: Technology: Free shows, free stuff

The Freecycle Network is a nonprofit movement of people who are giving – and getting – stuff for free in an effort to prevent useful items going into landfills. Over five and a half million members across the globe are part of this grassroots organization that proves the old adage that “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.”

The site is freecycle.org and it directs you to a group in your geographical area. Upon joining, you can browse the email-format offers and requests for items that vary from a bag of rags to vacuum cleaners. Pickup is arranged between the giver and the taker and the only rule is that all items must be free
