NZ Herald Dunedin Metro: A Christchurch couple attempt to go a full year without creating

The problem was solved however, after I placed an ad in our local Freecycle group. Freecycle is a geographically based Yahoo group that enables you to list, and view, items to be given away for free. People are able to view the items and then email if they would like them.

The first person to make contact is then given an address from where to pick the item up. In our case six people were interested in the glasshouse. The result is that our glasshouse will be off to Dunsandel, 40mins from Christchurch, with the new owner coming over this weekend to begin deconstruction.

Then I put an ad on Freecycle (the web-based free swap) but before I had a reply I happened to see a locksmith store and he had what I wanted: a padlock in a cardboard box.

It wasn’t on display, he had to go out the back and dig for it for about two minutes! What a lot of effort.

5. Easy find: Online charity DonateNZ (www.donatenz.com) is a portal to donate unwanted goods to community organisations who need them. The site connects donors and recipients, who arrange the transactions between themselves. Similarly, www.freecycle.org connects individuals who have stuff they no longer want with people who are looking for goods.

Computerworld New Zealand: E-tales: Make it local, make it real

People are finally starting to get a bit inventive about recycling, and some clever souls have realised that one way to do it is online. The result: www.freecycle.org

The US-based international site already has over 5,000 Kiwi members and the idea is that if you’ve got something that’s still okay but you don’t need it and would like to pass it on to a good home this is one way to go. Of course, it works the other way too.

Look for gifts that just keep on giving

Breakfast TV tells the story of a man who is so passionate about saving the planet his cerebral palsy could not hinder his efforts. He runs part of a network called ‘freecycle’ which has been dubbed ‘Trade Me with a conscience.’
