The Freecycle Network noted that the process is keeping more than 400 tons out of the landfills daily.

Join Hands Day will promote recycling

May 4, 2006

Join Hands Day will be from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 6 at the Anderson County Recycling Education Center, on the hill just across the street from the Civic Center in Anderson. Modern Woodmen of America Youth Service Club, ages 5-15 years, is partnering with Anderson County Environmental Services Division (ESD) — Solid Waste/Recycling, Animal Shelter, Air & Water Quality, Wastewater Management and Anderson Freecycle to promote civic pride and involvement and reducing, reusing and recycling of materials to divert waste from our landfills and to promote services provided for residents of Anderson County.

Join Hands Day is designed to bring youth and adults together to plan and complete volunteer service projects in the community. They also learn about each other and develop understanding and respect.

Following the meeting, the group will have an ice cream social and hot dog cookout.

During brief interludes when she’s not on the road, Harvey says she’s learning to grow things, experimenting with gardening in “scary-looking mondo pots” she got from Freecycle. “It is wondrous to play in the dirt and wrangle with things like roots and sun and the right amount of water. Little tomatoes, yellow peppers, herbs and amaryllis… I can’t wait to come back from the road and see how tall my bits have grown.”
