Most people’s default response is to go to a store anytime they need something, but that’s not the only way to obtain a needed item. Ask yourself these questions:

Can I get it for free?

Instead of spending $15, $20 or more on your child’s (or your own) Halloween costume, you can save both money and resources by creating your own. Dig through your closets or browse local resale shops and flea markets for vintage clothes that could make fun costumes. Or put out a request through your local Freecycle or craigslist for used costumes. You’re probably not the only person in your neighborhood to have a few costumes from Halloweens past buried in the back of your closet.

The act of dropping furniture curbside or visiting apartment dumpsters for new lamps is alive and well in Davis - and with moving day nigh, it’s about to hit peak season.

Dumpster diving, as the practice is commonly called, is legal so long as the goods remain on private property - that’s just up to the sidewalk curb, said Sue Gedestad, operations administrator for the City of Davis.

Recycle group breaks ranks with Freecycle by Buffy Pollock

While Sams Valley resident Sheri Barnes had used the Medford Freecycle group to give and get everything from used clothes and appliances to old furniture and fall veggies, she drew the line at personal information.

With Barnes and fellow group moderator America Fucci at the helm, and following suit with Freecycle groups around the country, some 900 former Medford “freecyclers” recently broke away to form Rogue Valley Recyclers, registered under the ReUseIt Network (www.reuseitnetwork.org).
