San Francisco Chronicle: Yawns: new breed of rich and young but frugal

That helps explain why Earth Day has become so big again, why products are all going “green” and why freecycle.org, an Internet community bulletin board where members offer items for free, has grown in five years from a dozen members in Tucson, Ariz., to a network of over 3,000 cities in 80 countries.

Deron Beal, the site’s founder, counts 4 million members, and growing by 20,000 to 50,000 members each week.

“People have many reasons for freecycling,” said Beal. “But the biggest reason is environmental — reusing and recycling instead of helping create more waste.”

A year after having first noticed the green ‘cyber’wave, months after informing the world about Global Internet giants going green and weeks after being appointed as the new Moderator of the Delhi Freecycle Network(TM) group, the green ‘cyber’wave just got stronger. And Yahoo! has taken the lead. Starting Earth Day, it is not just spreading the message, “Free is good - Give stuff, get stuff. Do good for the environment” through its green pages, but is also working to achieve the same.

Modesto Bee: Bike shop locks up deal for Modestan

Networking can be the best way to solve problems. That’s what happened when Shirley Nutt, chairwoman of the board of Special Needs Advocates for Understanding, was on www.freecycle.org a few weeks ago looking for things to sell at SNAFU’s rummage sale. On the site, she found a request from a man looking for a bike for his friend, an older man with special needs.

Turns out the Modesto man’s bike had been stolen.

But enter the “freegans” who embrace the minimal consumption of resources by salvaging unspoiled food from supermarket Dumpsters. They aren’t homeless; they aren’t poor. They are making a political statement about waste. Just like freecycle.org, which lists items people are giving away, freegans are anti-consumerism and working outside the money loop. They’re saying cents often don’t make sense.

There’s a new way to recycle that’s taking off. It’s called freecycling. People join a local online group to give away items they no longer need, and to get things they DO need. Consumer Reports Money Adviser explored the give and take of this unique recycling effort.

The goal of the Freecycle Network is to create a worldwide “gifting” movement in order to keep usable items out of landfills. Membership is free. Just go to freecycle.org to look for your local group, register, and soon you’ll be receiving e-mail messages telling you what’s “offered,” what’s “wanted,” and what has been “taken.” You’ll find everything from clothes to electronics, exercise equipment, and furniture.

Arlene spends a lot of time on freecycle.com. Here’s how it works: you can either post stuff you don’t want or look for something you might need. And get this: it’s all free!

Luggage sets, a computer cart, and even jewelry. Or lawn chairs. OK, they’re missing a few straps but Arlene says, somebody might be able to use it.

“Because these things are free and they go fast,” said Arlene.
