Velocity: Living Space Free For All

Freecycle

Here’s an example of what the online Freecycle network can do for you.

I had a dilemma: My plan was to start lifting weights at home to save on gym membership fees, but I lacked the equipment. Then I remembered the magic of Freecycle.

I recalled that a financially-strapped friend told me about using Freecycle to acquire a free space heater for his drafty bedroom. Apparently, there were sources other than my mom’s basement for finding free stuff to stock my apartment. My fellow citizens were just waiting to give me their unused bookcases, end tables and office chairs — all I had to do was ask!

Hawaii Island Journal: Sustaining Hawaii

Freecycle Big Island currently has nearly 1700 members. Seven months ago Beal told Sonia Martinez-founder of the 1700-member Freecycle Big Island (and HIJ food writer)-that her group had kept an estimated 300 tons of items out of the local landfills. Worldwide, Freecycle’s over 4,597,000 members give and receive about 300 tons of stuff each day.
Local members have given and received everything from TVs to pets, from egg cartons to dressmakers’ dummies, from boats to baby furniture, from a Jacuzzi to a truckload of dirt. Children’s clothing and books, and tools and building supplies, are popular items. One woman is building a house almost entirely out of recycled materials, many of them from other Freecycle members.

E-mail

COLUMBUS, Ohio — In this day and age saving money and the environment are important. Now there’s a new trend that lets you do both. It’s called freecycling.

It’s a network of people online who are giving stuff away and looking for new things — all for free.

Here’s how it works: First, you find a network in your community. NBC 4 went online and found a group in Columbus and in several other communities around Central Ohio.

Then, you join the e-mail offerings — everything from furniture to clothes. Be prepared for a deluge of e-mail. You may want to create a special folder where all your freecycle e-mail is directed.

And be a good member, NBC 4 reported. In your first posting, you’ll probably want to offer, not ask, for something.

To find out more about freecycling and a list of groups in the Columbus area, search keyword: FREECYCLING.

Make a trade
Sites like Freecycle and Zwaggle allow you to offer up your old items and get items from other users (with Freecycle, there is only an honor system, Zwaggle uses a points system for the bartering). The nice thing? It’s free.
