Rules & Etiquette

Freecycle® Rules & Etiquette. (Updated Apr 23). Rules

01. Everything posted must be FREE, legal and appropriate for all ages.

02. Keep the Subject line short (30 characters maximum, including spaces) describing your item, use the body of the message for more details

03. Personal details including FULL POSTCODES, STREET NAMES, EMAIL ADDRESSES & TELEPHONE NUMBERS, including MOBILES, are NOT allowed in the posts. Also web links are not allowed. Posts containing this kind of information will, in future, be edited to remove it.

04. Only re-post after 4 days, as there is a 4 day minimum gap required between re-posting an OFFER message for the same item on the same group.

05. When you post an OFFER or WANTED, post it *ONLY* to your home group. If you haven't received a response after 4 days, then post it to the next nearest group. Cross-posting is not allowed on several groups.

05a Add you local Area/Town and your 1st part of your postcode as the location ie Billericay CM12 / Hutton CM13 etc. Dont add bits like Near Station, Near High Street, Near so and so School, Back of Shops or Names of Roads or Buildings etc.

05b. Only add ONE (1) specific item per post, dont use 'assorted items' or 'House clearance' or 'Bedroom Furniture' etc, this makes it easier for you to mark specific items as 'TAKEN' and also easier to sort through emails from any replying members.

06. Each WANTED post will be limited to requesting ONE (1) specific item (e.g. Double wardrobe). Please do NOT repeat your 'WANTED' posts for at least 14 days.

07. Please do not use emotive language in a WANTED posting. Words such as 'desperate' or 'urgent' or 'please help', may result in your post being edited or rejected.

08. Please do not pad out a WANTED posting with personal information about why you want the item, its OK to ask for an item without having to explain why.

09. This group does not allow traders, resellers, car booters or ebay/facebook sellers.

10. SCAMS - If you respond to a post & the respondent asks for money, DO NOT send them any money. Instead, forward the email to the moderators and we will remove them from the Freecycle community.

11. DO NOT place posts for businesses, services, volunteers or jobs.

12. DO NOT place posts for Fish / pets / animals / livestock. We do not have the resources to verify their health or background.

13. We cannot accept 'WANTED' posts for scrap metal dealers as we do not have the resources to verify their licences. (UK only)

14. Please do not ask to swap items, borrow/loan items or ask/offer money for an item. Posts containing such material will be rejected and the member put back on moderation.

15. Regarding gas, waste and safety regulations, we are unable to accept certain post for some things, as Freecycle is open to members 13 or over, age restricted items such as pressurised gas bottles which include calor gas, butane canisters and fire extinguishers are not permitted. Oil tanks are an environmental risk and there are laws that prevent them being passed on or illegally disposed of.

16. For safety reasons, all members should be aware of potential risks regarding baby and child equipment.

17. When making a post, please be aware that not all of our members are familiar with text/internet speak. Please take this into consideration when composing a post.

18. When responding to a post, please make your response as polite as possible. Many members are offended by short, curt replies & will be unlikely to respond to you.

19. Please do not post in capital letters. THIS IS CONSIDERED RUDE SHOUTING.

20. DO NOT make a proviso that a member can have an offered item if they will dismantle/remove items that should be done by a professional i.e. tree surgery or felling, mains gas fires, cookers, boilers or that they must tidy or make good an area upon removal.

21. Charitable organisations/schools/nurseries wishing to request items must send to the moderator team the name, registered charity number and website url of the charity. An authorised member of the charity should e-mail the moderating team by logging in and using the 'Green Button with a question mark in' link at the bottom of the home page to contact us.

22. If you are not receiving responses to your posts, it may be because your email provider is recognising Freecycle as spam. To resolve this issue, please add *@freecycle.org to your contacts/address book.
