Useful local links

  • Oxfam Charity Shops take a wide variety of items. Consider them especially if you have out-of-the-ordinary books to give away. They won't let a valuable book go for a song.
  • S.C.R.A.T.C.H. is a local charity which provides furniture and household items to those in need.
  • Your local Salvation Army Charity Shop not only accepts donations of wearable clothing, but also clean rags for recycling.
  • Free Books Southampton give free books out to the community.
  • The Recycling Centre or 'tip' may be the place of last resort, but we recommend it for scrap wood and metal. Note that it sells some items taken there, including for example, furniture and golf clubs. They also have an un-rivaled display of naff garden ornaments!
  • Winchester Freecycle Group has a file called "I can't give it away on Freecycle.org - what can I do with it?" with some useful suggestions in it.
  • We have no experience of The Southampton Wood Recycling Project but it may be of interest to anyone wanting or offering wood for either construction or fuel.
  • Mending is a good way to keep things out of landfill. Repair Cafes are held monthly (except January) in Southampton. They tackle most portable items including electrical, sewing, computers, bikes and jewellery.
  • Southampton Freegle was founded in May 2019. It is an alternative to Freecycle and is run on the same lines.
